Disrupt Your Rhythm
I think the time has come to disrupt my rhythm. Why?
My rhythm's not at all bad. I like my rhythm. I actually love my rhythm.
But I'm beginning to think I'm in somewhat of a rut. A very comfortable rut. A rut that keeps me from pursuing my best.
I need to pause, reflect and analyze, while bathed in prayer. I need to ask if I've somehow gotten off track with the direction God has been taking me. If I've allowed unnecessary clutter to fill my days.
What does disrupting one's rhythm look like? It's the same as shaking up your routine. But do it prayerfully with a distinct purpose.
My purpose is to be more aware of God's Presence. To more deeply commune with Him. To be able to freely receive His love. To listen. To walk in obedience to Him.
For me, it meant shaking up my oh-so-comfortable morning routine. It wasn't bad. It just kept me from something better.
For you, it might be as simple as driving a different route to work. Reading a Psalm in the morning. Getting up earlier and hurrying less. Spending more time outside. Watching less tv. Listening to a great podcast. Reading a new book. Doing a social media fast.
So much can be said about the discipline of weeding the clutter out, whether it be clutter in our spaces, clutter in our schedule or clutter in our mind. Entire books have been written about this.
Bob Goff in his book "Dream Big" said that when "you clear the path and offload old routines, make a sincere effort to understand why you've been doing what you've been doing. When you do this, your life may look and feel a little strange and empty at first. You will probably sense some unease and unfamiliarity. Don't back off. It's a good thing. Lean into it. This is exactly the subtle shake up dreamers like you need."
Just for today consider one or two changes that you can make that might open up your Spirit to more fully abiding in His Presence.
And as you remove certain things, learn to feast on God's Word.
Learn to pay attention.
"Teach me Your way, O Lord;
I will walk in Your truth;
Unite my heart to fear Your name.
I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
And I will glorify Your name forevermore."
(Psalms 86:11-12)
