Fear and Deception- Guest Blog by Dr. Joe and Denise Pridgen
Snakes, Goblins and Witches, O Me! Combatting Fear, Deception and Idolatry…
This is not a comprehensive article by any means; just some thoughts to help us navigate through some areas we may not consciously recognize which seek to destroy our faith, trust and courage during these unsettling and confusing times in our daily lives.
Fear (to lurk in wait for, strive, devise ill against). If we look at fear as a tangible commodity, we can ask ourselves: “What is fear looking to obtain from us?”
“The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?” (Psalm 27:1, NASB)
Fear has many definitions: As a noun; an unpleasant strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger; anxious concern, reason for alarm. As a verb; to be afraid of; expect the worst; be apprehensive. And the list goes on…
I believe God instilled caution in us - and we are taught to be cautious - in order to protect ourselves. If we touch something hot, we know not to touch it again. We learn to fear heights because falling hurts. You probably won’t step on an ant-bed more than once (intentionally, that is). We fear being bitten by snakes and certain bugs and other animals because they can cause intense pain or even death.
Satan’s job is to use fear to destroy our trust, distort our perceptions, and disavow God’s truth for us, and to us. We can trust that God has the strength, power, love and concern for the areas of fears with which we struggle.
Here are some scriptures to meditate on when you feel fearful or afraid; “Be anxious (fearful) for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6,7, NASB)
“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3, NASB)
“I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.” (Psalm 34:4, NASB)
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9, NASB)
“Do not fear them, for the LORD your God is the One fighting for you.” (Deuteronomy 3:22, NASB)
Don’t let the snakes of fear, the goblins of deception, or the witches of idolatry have any victory in your life. Use God’s healing power through His word in your life to bring you victory daily.
